APPLYING SMARTWATER TO EXTERNAL METALS
HOW TO APPLY
Make sure that all the areas that you mark are clean and dry. Brush off excess dirt and grease using a wire brush or a similar method. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. During use replace the cap and shake the bottle every 15 minutes.
When marking a lead roof or flashing it is always best to mark the underside of the lead. If this not possible SmartWater should be brushed in a continuous line along joints and seams of the roof (where one sheet of metal joins the next) and along edges of flashing (where it comes out of the wall and along the bottom edge).
Do not apply to surfaces if rain is expected within 4 hours of application. SmartWater will have dried fully within 24 hours. The application is guaranteed for a minimum of 5 years under BSI PAS820, this can be periodically checked using a UV light (365nm).
Remember to erect your THIEVES BEWARE® deterrent signs – these are best displayed where criminals might gain access to items at risk. This could be a wall adjacent to a low-level roof, or a drainpipe providing access to the roof. If you are applying to a church roof, view our handy Signage Guide.
WHERE SHOULD I APPLY SMARTWATER?
Although SmartWater is virtually invisible, it can leave a slight sheen when dry; also, samples taken for recovery of evidence may cause slight scuffing. Therefore avoid marking surfaces which are on view where possible. If you have any concerns, we suggest that you test SmartWater on an inconspicuous area or another similar surface beforehand.
When marking a lead roof or flashing it is always best to mark the underside of the lead. If this is not possible use a brush to mark edges and rough surfaces.
Where possible, SmartWater should be applied directly to the surface of the metal. Applying SmartWater on top of a ‘barrier’ such as Patternation Oil could affect the adherence and allow for easier removal, though it will not directly impede detection. Again, we would recommend that SmartWater could be applied to the untreated underside, providing this is accessible.
Please refer to the below images for further guidance on how to mark typical external metal structures. PLEASE NOTE – the dotted line is purely for illustrative purposes – SmartWater should always be applied in a continuous, unbroken line.
RE-APPLYING SMARTWATER TO EXTERNAL METAL
If re-applying SmartWater, please attempt to apply the new solution to areas that have not, previously, been marked. If uncertain, please check for the presence of a previous application using an ultraviolet light (long wave, 365nm) – where any areas previously marked will glow a bright yellow-green. By following this guidance, you will help simplify analysis in the event of theft and subsequent recovery of the marked item.
