Metal Theft is evolving
Our team of intelligence experts have identified a worrying recent shift in criminal behaviour, with a significant rise in organised criminal gangs systematically targeting churches and stripping them of lead. This has resulted in the average claim for a lead theft vastly exceeding the maximum limit of insurance cover offered to most churches. Consequently, just one major theft could leave your church with crippling repair costs that are almost impossible to recover from.
ACADEMIC RESEARCH HAS SHOWN 74% OF CRIMINALS WILL NOT COMMIT A CRIME WHERE A SMARTWATER STICKER IS ON DISPLAY.**
Flexible Solutions
Following the government’s crackdown on the scrap metal industry, thieves have been increasingly switching their attention to slate and stone. With thefts being reported from churches and heritage sites, as well as road, pavements and homes, the media and government are now citing this blight on our heritage as an ‘epidemic’ that requires urgent action. SmartWater has responded by creating a series of bespoke forensic solutions specifically for the protection of stone, proividing irrefutable traceability to flagstones, dry stone walls, paving and other porous surfaces.
‘Royal’ Support
Our charitable arm, the SmartWater Foundation is working in partnership with the War Memorial Trust to locate, log and protect as many of the 100,000 war memorials there are in the UK, providing all the products, services and support, free of charge. Sadly, in recent years, a considerable number of memorials were stolen by thieves who sold them as scrap metal, but the extra protection provided by the application of a unique SmartWater® forensic solution reduced theft to almost zero. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is Patron of our partners the War Memorial Trust and has actively supported In Memoriam 2014 including, on occasion, applying SmartWater to a number of high profile, historic memorials.

“Theft of metal is a serious crime and has had a devastating effect on a large number of our customers since 2007. From the beginning of the metal theft epidemic, we have been working in close partnership with SmartWater and continue to promote it to our customers. We believe that the SmartWater brand is a very powerful tool in our fight against metal theft, as it is well known amongst potential thieves and acts as a significant deterrent.”
“It is also apparent that as a crime metal theft is becoming more systematic and the perpetrators more organised. As a result, an integrated approach is needed to mitigate the risk and SmartWater forms an important element in this. It is a proven deterrent against metal theft.”
